Campus Information
[  ] Pulchowk Campus
Under Tribhuvan University there are various faculties and institutes. The Institute of engineering is one of the Institutes of Tribhuvan University. Under the Institute of Engineering, there are four constituent campuses and ten private colleges. Pulchowk Campus is the central campus of the Institute of Engineering. It was established in 1972 (2029 B.S) as one of the constituent campuses of the Institute of Engineering and is situated at the heart of the Lalitpur city at Pulchowk. Initially, it was started for the production of trade-level manpower to fulfill the nation’s need in the field of Engineering. Pulchowk campus offered diploma level (intermediate level with three years duration) courses in various engineering disciplines since 1973 (2030 BS) but diploma level courses are phased out now. Pulchowk campus has been offering bachelor’s degree courses in various engineering disciplines since 1984 (2041 BS).

Till 1984 Pulchowk Campus was involved in producing low to middle-level engineering manpower in the field of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture. Realizing the national and global demand gradually the country felt a need for engineering manpower at a higher level. As a result, four years of bachelor level course in Civil Engineering was introduced in 1984. Gradually, bachelors in Electrical Engineering and bachelor in Electronics Engineering started from 1994 (2051 BS), bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and Architecture started from 1995 (2052 BS) and bachelors in Computer Engineering started from 1998 (2055 BS). All these Bachelors in Engineering (BE) programs were introduced for the first time in Nepal.

Currently, Pulchowk Campus offers bachelor’s level, master’s level, and Ph.D. level programs in different areas of engineering. The medium of instruction for all academic levels is English.

This campus is well equipped with necessary laboratories with great strength of faculties and staff. Separate buildings for academic and administrative purposes has become the center of excellence of engineering education in Nepal.

Pulchowk Campus has been awarded the “Best Constituent Campus Award” by Nepal Government, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in 2019.

It is adjacent to Charkose Jhadi (densely forest) in the north and located at entrance gate by bus of Dharan Sub-metropolitan city.

It was established in Paush, 2034 BS (1976) under the loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB). In another agreement with government of United Kingdom (UK) held in Shrawn, 2035BS (1978), the technical assistance was provided by the government of United Kingdom (UK). ERC was formally organized under Institute of Engineering (IOE), Tribhuvan University (TU) and all the construction works were completed in 2043 BS (1984).

The campus firstly started trade level courses in Mechanical, Electrical and Civil engineering streams as specified in the loan and the project agreements. The  programs in Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering (3 years) was started since 2043 BS (1984) and also Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Engineering program in 2052 BS, Computer and electronics engineering program in 2059 BS. In the attempt to further up gradation, IOE/ Purwanchal Campus introduced Bachelor level course that was Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Agricultural Engineering in 2057 BS (2000) which was first and pioneer in the country. Another BE program in Civil Engineering was commenced from 2061 BS (2004).

The campus was also conducted under Council for Technical Education & Vocational Training (CTEVT) since 2045/11/12 (BS) by the mandate of Government of Nepal and later again came back and run under IOE/ TU since 2047/2/15 BS.

Within the framework of development objectives and strategy, IOE/ Purwanchal Campus has been proposed to develop as focused in centre of excellence in engineering education in eastern region of the country. After successful running the programs in BE in Agricultural and Civil Engineering, it was started another programs in Electronics & communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering in 2069 (BS) and Electrical Engineering in 2071 (BS) and new program BE in Architecture in 2072 (BS). Till now there are seven BE engineering programs running in the campus and all trade level courses, three years diploma engineering programs was phased out as per policy of IOE/TU which was started since beginning of the establishment of the campus.

At present there are more than 1200 students are studying in different programs. The physical facilities of IOE/ Purwanchal campus are developed and spread in around 35 bigahas of land that includes building space for classes, library, workshops, laboratories, administrative building, students’ hostel (boys & girls), housing for faculty and staff and other services like access of roads, electricity, internet & communication and drinking water etc. The workshops and laboratories are with equipped with state of art tools, equipments and machines for the students. There are 100 plus teaching faculty and 60 plus administrative and supportive staff at the campus. The faculty members are well qualified and trained in different allied areas of engineering and technology and they have several years of experience in their respective areas of specialization.

[  ] Thapathali Campus
In the presence of Late King Mahendra, Late Dr. Heinrich Lubke, Presendent of Federal Republic of Germany inaugurated Technical Institute (TTI) on 29th of Falgun 2023 B.S.(13-11-2067 AD). The Technical Training Institute(TTI) offered midlevel manpower course in mechanical engineering, automobile engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical drafting beginning. With the assistance from the Government of Federal republic of Germany, Technical Training Institute Project (TTIP) was established in Nepal in 2019 B.S.(2063 AD), with the sole objective of producing trained tradespersons and technicians needed for the development of the country. TTI started three years vocational training in Mechanical, Automobile and Electrical trades for S.L.C. graduates from 2022 B.S.(1966 AD) to 2024  B.S. (1968 AD) At the meantime, the three years course in Mechanical Drafting was transferred to Pulchowk, IOE.

From 2029 B.S. (1973 AD)this Technical Training Institute (TTI) was renamed as Thapathali Campus under Tribhuvan University (T.U.) and known as Institute of Engineering. From 2033 B.S.(1977 AD) Campus started  two years course proficiency certificate level (PCL) for SLC sent up students.Thapathali Campus thereafter. Campus started 3 years course Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and Diploma in Automobile Engineering in 2043 B.S.(1987 AD). and later on, Diploma in Electronics Engineering and Diploma in Computer Engineering started from 2058 B.S. (2002 AD).

According to the policy of Institute of Engineering (IOE), campus introduce Bachelor in Industrial Engineering in 2062 B.S.(2006 AD), bachelor in Civil Engineering in 2066 B.S., Bachelor in Electronics and Communication engineering in 2067 B.S., bachelor in Mechanical Engineering in 2068 B.S., by stopping new intakes in any diploma courses from 2070 B. S.(2014 AD). Again, Campus has intake Bachelor in Architecture and M.Sc. in Earthquake Engineering in 2071 B.S.(2015 AD), Bachelor in Automobile Engineering in 2072 B.S.(2016 AD) and M.Sc. in mechanical design & manufacturing in 2073 B.S.(2017 AD) also. The latest faculty in campus had started is M.Sc. in Infromatics and Intellegent Systems Engineering under the Electronics and Computer Department in 2077 BS.(2020 AD).All Masters classes are conducted in evening session.

The existing infrastructures, human resources moreover fulfill the requirement of diploma level courses. There is an utmost need of renovation restructuring the existing infrastructures and human resources to stabilize the bachelor and masters courses and also to address the growing demands. To sustain the restructuring and complete it, and to aggressively move forward to achieve higher levels of excellence with the intent of becoming one of the engineering campus in the nation, a comprehensive restructuring document is necessary. Creating a plan involves listening to many ideas from stake holders, assembling the ideas into a framework that support the mission and vision of the campus.
