State no. 1 covers 25,905 km2 of the total area of Nepal. The province is divided into three parts on the basis of topography: the Himalayas in the north, the hills in the middle and the Terai in the south of Nepal, and varies in altitude from 70 meters to 8,848.86 meters above sea level. There is a valley called Inner Terai between the Mahabharata Range and the Churia Range to the west of the river Koshi and the Char Koshe bush of the Terai stretching from east to west. The lowest point in Nepal, Kechna Kaval at 70 meters, is located in the Jhapa district of the province. There are also many river basins and gentle slopes. The Chure, Mahabharata, several basins, tars and valleys form the Terai region. Between the Churia and the Mahabharata lie the lowlands of the interior Terai. River Koshi with its seven tributaries flows through this region; Indravati, Likhu, Tamur, Dudhkoshi, Arun, Tamakoshi and Bhote Koshi (Sunkoshi). The vegetation found here is tundra vegetation, coniferous forests, deciduous monsoon forests and sub-tropical evergreen forests. It has sub-tropical, temperate, sub-temperate and alpine and tundra types of climate. State no. 1 also includes snow-capped peaks including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Solukhumbu with Makalu, Sankhuwasabha and towards the north Taplejung district, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Bhojpur, Tehrathum, Ilam and central forested hilly areas of Panchthar. Fertile plains of Udaipur, Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa. State no. 1 includes places like Haleshi Mahadev Temple, Pathibhara Temple and Barahkshetra, which are famous religious pilgrimage sites for Hindus.

Despite the naming of 6 provinces out of 7 provinces of Nepal, province no. There was a dispute about what to name 1. Both "Kirat Pradesh" and "Sagarmata Pradesh" proposals for its name were tabled in the state assembly last year. But B.S. Province 1 has been renamed as "Koshi Province" by the meeting of the State Assembly dated 2079-11-17. Along with this the last named province is "Koshi Pradesh".
